Navigating Election Season: Organizations Supporting Queer Voters

Updated: 2 days ago

The election is just one week away. For many of us, this is a scary, intimidating time. It’s crucial for queer individuals to know they’re not alone in navigating the complexities of the election, voting, and civic engagement. These organizations are dedicated to ensuring that LGBTQ+ voices are amplified and that everyone has the support they need to participate fully in the democratic process. Below are five organizations in which we believe can help everyone feel like their voice is heard.

At Affirming Quakers, we love the Human Rights Campaign! We’ve written about it several times and their good work is continuing in this unpredictable season. The HRC is one of the largest LGBTQ+ advocacy groups in the U.S.

They provide valuable resources for voters such as information on LGBTQ+ candidates, issues at stake in elections, and guidance on how to vote. Their commitment to equality ensures that queer voices are represented in every election, which is something that has not always happened. If you aren’t sure the best way to vote or what you’re voting on in your state, visit the Human Rights Campaign.

At the state level, The Equality Federation works to support and strengthen LGBTQ+ organizations. There website presents tools and resources for voters to help them understand local, state, and national issues that impact the queer community. Their efforts focus on building grassroots power to ensure equitable representation for all. You can view their resources and sign up for updates about critical LGBTQ+ issues here.

While Vote.org focuses on more than just the LGBTQ+ community, it is still an essential resource for all voters. They offer comprehensive information on registration, polling places, and voting rights. For some, it’s a big first step just to get registered and figuring out where to cast their vote. Vote.com can help queer individuals ensure they are prepared to vote without unnecessary barriers. If you need to check your registration status, discover what’s on the ballot in your area, or simply where your polling place is, Vote.org is a one stop shop for information.

The LGBTQ Victory Fund works to elect openly LGBTQ+ candidates to public office. They provide support for candidates and engage voters in understanding the importance of electing representatives who will advocate for LGBTQ+ rights. For many, seeing an LGBTQ+ person in office makes them feel like their best interest is being looked out for. By focusing on increasing representation, they help ensure that queer issues remain at the forefront of political discourse. The National LGBTQ Task Force is dedicated to building a powerful movement for LGBTQ+ rights. They engage in advocacy, education, and outreach efforts to empower voters. Their website is a treasure trove of information spanning from the history of fighting for equal rights, to their goals, and even events you can attend. Their resources can help queer individuals understand the broader implications of their votes on issues that affect their lives. If you’re looking for specifics on their work, it can be found here.

This election season, it’s essential for queer individuals to feel empowered, informed, and have the necessary information on where to vote. The organizations listed above are dedicated to supporting LGBTQ+ voters and ensuring that their voices are heard! By engaging with these resources, queer individuals can navigate the voting process with confidence, knowing they have the support and advocacy needed to make their voices count. Whatever happens between now and November 5, please know that feeling worried or anxious about candidates or issues is normal. Together, we can work towards a more inclusive democracy that honors and uplifts every identity.

All of these websites, along with other resources for LGBTQ+ people, can be found on the Affirming Quakers website.
